Rebecca Brown
Student at Edinburgh Napier – Product Design BDes (Hons)

Hello, I’m Rebecca a Product Designer. I have a keen interest in designing for neurodivergent people (such as ADHD and Autism) and making products that are helpful while sparking joy.

Below I’ve put my various projects into different sections. With a short brief above explaining what is in each project. Click on the images for the full project. If you wish to know more about projects contact me by email at RAB2632@hotmail.com

FOOTER – A Sensory kit for reducing anxiety and stress in neurodivergent people

The sensory kit aims to encourage safe stimming behaviours to aid in regulating tension caused by stress and anxiety. Stimming is most commonly known as repetitive behaviours that manifests in physical movements or vocalizations, but it can also be smell and other senses.
With stress and depression being common in people with both autism and ADHD, I wanted to look for a way to support these people using design.

Scottish Design Exchange (Functional Jewellery)

This was a work exchange in partnership with my university and Scottish Design Exchange (SDX). In which I was tasked with designing whatever product I wanted with the idea that the shop sold local artist and designers works. Ending up with functional jewellery for people with autism and ADHD.

Damask weaving

The brief for this project was to take a dying craft in the UK and bring the techniques into a modern day context. Through learning about damask weaving, a technique to make reversible fabric, I learned how to replicate it by hand. Using the reversible nature of the method to make a wash cloth to replace scrubbing sponges that had a jute side for scrubbing and a recycled fabric side for softer cleaning.

Firefly – Children’s light

The idea was to design a light that would encourage children to explore nature. This was encouraged through the shape and materials used in the product. Using natural or recycled materials to further the teaching opportunity about being nice to nature.

Cop 26 Project

I was tasked with upcycling life-vests to create a product to promote Cop 26 as it was in Glasgow. Using the symbolic meaning behind butterflies, promoting change and hope for the future, I turned the nylon fabric from the life-vests into simple pins. There was 100 made to be given out, reminding people of the event and continuing the mindset we need to be in to heal our world.

Boozy Bunny

We were told to do a project on making our own chocolate box. Through development this turned into a box of chocolates that though a story about bunnies taught people to turn their box into a propagation tray for plants. The two flavours of chocolates are coconut rum white chocolate and Glayva caramel milk chocolate, the alcoholic truffles on the inside with tempered snap chocolate on the outside.

Typewriter Model Making

I made a scale model of the Olivetti Valentine typewriter. Given two weeks to make it. Made of mounting board and paper.
